Why This Program is Structured This Way

This Intro to Freshwater SUP Surf program is designed with progression, safety, and enjoyment in mind. Before heading into waves, we build a strong foundations, giving you time to refine your paddle stroke, improve board control, and get comfortable in non-flat, dynamic conditions.

By working through these skills step by step, I’m able to assess each paddler’s ability and provide focused feedback so you feel prepared and confident when it’s time to surf. Keeping the group small also means more personalized coaching, a safer learning environment, and a better overall experience on the water.

The goal is simple: help you progress with intention, stay safe in Great Lakes conditions, and to have fun!

All participants must have their own board, paddle, leash, appropriate neoprene and water gear.

This program takes place in dynamic, wavy conditions, so participants should already be comfortable paddlers and be able to remount their board independently.

All-around or surf-style SUP boards are best suited for this program, as they offer the stability and maneuverability needed in wave conditions. Hard boards are strongly recommended for optimal performance. If you have an inflatable board, please contact me directly to discuss your board’s suitability and safety, as conditions and skill level may affect whether it’s appropriate.

If you’re unsure about your setup, feel free to reach out! I’m happy to help you determine the best option.
