Why This Program is Structured This Way

This Intro to Freshwater SUP Surf program is designed with progression, safety, and enjoyment in mind. Before heading into waves, we build strong foundations, giving you time to refine your paddle stroke, improve board control, and get comfortable in non-flat, dynamic conditions.

By working through these skills step by step, I’m able to assess each paddler’s ability and provide focused feedback so you feel prepared and confident when it’s time to surf. Keeping the group small also means more personalized coaching, a safer learning environment, and a better overall experience on the water.

The goal is simple: help you progress with intention, stay safe in Great Lakes conditions, and to have fun!

These are important foundations in order to quickly maneuver and gain control in both flat and wavy conditions.

This program does not include any formal certifications. The skills and knowledge shared are intended to support your personal growth, confidence, and curiosity as a paddler and surfer.

All participants must have their own board, paddle, leash, appropriate neoprene and water gear.

It is recommended that participants are comfortable paddlers and be able to remount their board independently.

All-around or surf-style SUP boards are best suited for this program, as they offer the stability and maneuverability needed in wave conditions. Hard boards are strongly recommended for optimal performance. If you have an inflatable board, please contact me directly to discuss your board’s suitability and safety, as conditions and skill level may affect whether it’s appropriate.

If you’re unsure about your setup, feel free to reach out! I’m happy to help you determine the best option.
